The 136 sea view sites range from the largest holiday parks near major cities like Edinburgh to small, community-run camping areas on the tiny islands that bejewel the Atlantic sea. All you have to do is decide where you want to go and be ready for a fantastic time as you explore the lochs, forests, moors and mountains.

Wild camping in Scotland is still possible, and there are small, intimate campsites littered across the islands which are run by the islands' close-knit communities. These sites offer basic campsite facilities surrounded by stunning scenery and rare wildlife. You can truly get away from it all and enjoy camping at its purest on the Scottish Islands, surrounded only by nature and your own thoughts.

Users of RVs and 5th wheels should find it easy to navigate the wilds of Scotland as 115 camping parks accept large vehicles and our directions detail the easiest route even for large vehicles. Sea View caters for glampers too as 72 camping and caravan parks have rentable accommodation, like yurts, static caravans, teepees, B&Bs, hostels, hotels and camping pods

How does Sea View Camping work?

Barry Crawshaw inspected each Scottish camping park and its facilities and, as is typical of all Vicarious Books guides, the entries give you all the information you need to choose the right campsite for you.

Map of Scottish campsites printed on the front and rear covers list the campsites numerically starting with 1 on the east coast of Scotland near Edinburgh, moving anticlockwise around the Scottish coast and ending at the Scottish border near Glasgow. The campsite entries are listed in map number order at the front of the guide and in alphabetical order in the index at the back of the guide.

Enticing photography Every site has an image of the sea view from the campsite or holiday park. Following that is a written description of the sea view and details of the layout of the campsite and what sort of ground the different pitches are on (i.e. hardstanding, grass, gravel, etc). Also described are points of interest, amenities in the local area and the ease of beach access from the site. The symbols complement this information by telling you how large the site is (number of acres) and how many pitches there are, whether there is electricity and what amperage it is (where known) and lastly whether there are level or hardstanding areas. Typical campsite symbols highlight onsite facilities. For example, toilets, designated disabled toilets and facilities, showers, family bathrooms, dishwashing areas, washing machines and waste water and toilet waste disposal points. Also given are symbols denoting when slipways, pubs, shops, swimming pools, children's play areas and walking/cycling trails are located on or near the campsite (distances are given where appropriate in the information underneath the symbols).

Simple pricing structure Each campsite is priced according to our sliding scale from £-££££. Prices were determined using the price for two people in a motorhome with electricity during August. The symbols also detail: campsites that allow dogs, adult only campsites, members only campsites, CL (Certificated Location) or CS (Certificated Site) sites and campsites with WiFi or an internet point.

GPS and OS grid At the bottom of each entry clear directions are given as well as GPS coordinates taken at the holiday park entrance. These directions should be suitable for all vehicles and are written in clear, easy to understand language with signs and landmarks noted. For walkers, hikers and cyclists, the OS grid references are also given. Lastly, the opening dates of the campsite are written at the bottom of each entry.
